Before the chopper could touch the ground, Rebecca was already out and running towards several downed soldiers. A small 5-man platoon had taken heavy fire from a surprise attack during a reconnaissance mission. Three men were on the ground, shot and bleeding. Rebecca and the two able-bodied men began pulling the three to the chopper amidst the gunfire. Rebecca could see that one of them was already dead, but before she could tell the soldier carrying him, he was shot in the head and fell to the ground. “Move, move, move” she screamed to the man beside her. They reached the helicopter and begin loading in while the gunman on-board covered them. Once they were all in securely, the chopper took off from the area, narrowly avoiding further gunfire. Rebecca held on to the soldier she carried tightly as he squirmed in pain on the floor while the medic tried applying pressure to his wound. He began sobbing uncontrollably, telling Rebecca that he didn’t want to die. She looked at his tags and saw the name Roos and tried to comfort him. “You’re going to be alright, Roos. We’ll be to the base soon. You’ll be alright”. His aggressive squirming stopped midway through her sentence and his body was still. She didn’t bother looking back down and just held on to him for the rest of the ride back. She worked to hold back her own tears but was unable to.
