Bryan had been staring at the open water all afternoon long in silence. He watched the current flow back and forth. It was the same current that took his son away all those years ago. He said his goodbyes and picked his aching body up from the ground. He jolted up in shock when he heard the screams behind him. A younger woman, incoherently screaming in tears and pointing back out to the water, where her small daughter was. Bryan could make out the small arms flailing in the water. Without thinking, he was already several feet away from the shore, swimming to the small girl as fast as he could. As the small child began to sink into the abyss, he grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him. He yelled at her to hug him, but she was too young to understand so he continued to hold onto her with one hand while paddling back to shore with the other. As soon as there was sand to walk on, he picked her up to carry her to her mother, but stopped when he looked down. He was holding his son. Bryan stumbled and fell to his knees. His old bones couldn’t stand back up but he couldn’t take his eyes off his son, who was smiling and saying something inaudible to him. “Hey, champ” he whispered to him before wiping the ocean water from his face that was dripping from his hair. When he wiped his eyes, he saw the little girl again, crying for her mother, who had ran into the water to pull her from Bryan’s arms. Several other people ran up to help Bryan back onto his feet and to the spot where his shoes and towel were. Beach police came running up and the air filled with concerned chatter, but Bryan sat there in silence, staring out towards the open water again and smiling from ear to ear.
